Converting PDF to JPG, explained

Converting a PDF to JPG means "drawing" the visual content of each page of the document and exporting it as an image. This tool doesn't rely on any external library: the engine that interprets and draws the PDF was written specifically for Unido, and it runs on Canvas 2D directly in your browser.

The engine walks through the actual instructions of each PDF page: vector shapes and paths (lines, curves, rectangles), colors in gray, RGB, or CMYK, basic clipping, and embedded JPEG images, which are drawn using the browser's own image decoder. All of this is reproduced from the file's real content, not an approximation.

Text is the one place where this tool makes a deliberate, explicit approximation: since it doesn't include a font-rendering engine capable of reading the outlines of fonts embedded in the PDF, it decodes the text to its real Unicode form (using the PDF's /ToUnicode table when available, the same approach our PDF-to-Word converter uses) and redraws it with a generic system font, detecting whether a serif or sans-serif, monospace, or bold typeface fits based on the name of the original font. The result is faithful in content and position, but it doesn't reproduce the exact shape of each letter, kerning, or the original spacing.

There are also a handful of specific cases this tool doesn't decode, replacing them with a gray box instead: images in CCITT fax format, JPEG2000, indexed color palettes, or Separation/DeviceN inks; fill patterns (hatching and complex gradients) are replaced with flat gray; and transparency masks (SMask) are ignored, always compositing over a white background. These are uncommon cases in most PDFs produced by word processors or scanners, but we'd rather be upfront about this limitation than pretend to a fidelity that doesn't exist.

If the PDF has a single page, you download a .jpg file directly. If it has several pages, all the images are automatically grouped into a .zip file, one per page, also generated entirely in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free to convert a PDF to JPG with Unido?

Yes, Unido is completely free, with no usage limits and no need to create an account.

Does my file get uploaded to a server?

No. The entire conversion process happens inside your own browser. Your file never leaves your device or gets sent to any server.

Do I get one image per page?

Yes. If the PDF has a single page, you download a .jpg file directly. If it has several pages, you download a .zip file with one JPG image per page.

Is the result identical to the original PDF?

The shapes, colors, and images on each page are drawn from the PDF's actual content. Text, however, isn't rendered with the exact original typeface — there's no way to access the outlines of embedded fonts without a full PDF engine — so it's decoded and redrawn with a generic system font instead. The content and position of the text are faithful to the original, but it isn't an exact typographic reproduction.

What kind of content isn't reproduced correctly?

Fill patterns (complex hatching or gradients) are replaced with flat gray, and a few uncommon image formats inside a PDF (CCITT fax, JPEG2000, indexed color palettes, Separation/DeviceN inks) are shown as a gray box in place of the image instead of being decoded. Transparency masks (SMask) are ignored and everything is composited over a white background.

What's the maximum file size I can convert?

You can convert PDF files up to 100 MB.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

No, this tool doesn't support encrypted or password-protected PDFs. Remove the protection from the file before converting it.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes, Unido works in any modern browser, on both mobile and desktop, with nothing to install.
