Adding page numbers, explained

Adding page numbers with Unido means drawing each page's number directly on top of its content, using Helvetica — one of the 14 standard fonts every PDF reader (Adobe Reader, browsers, mobile viewers…) already has built in. That's why no font file needs to be embedded in the document: simply referencing "Helvetica" is enough for it to display correctly in any program.

Technically, this tool appends a small piece of new content — the page-number text, positioned based on that page's own size — to the end of each page's existing content, instead of replacing anything. The original text, images, and graphics in your PDF stay untouched; the page number is added on top, at the position you choose.

You can pick the format: "1 / 12" shows the page number together with the document's total page count, while "Page 1" shows just that page's number, preceded by the word "Page". And you can pick the position: centered at the bottom of the page, or in its bottom-right corner.

One honest limitation: the number is placed using each page's own internal coordinates, assuming the usual (0°) orientation. If your PDF has pages that already carry a rotation, the number may not land exactly at the visual bottom once the viewer applies that rotation — an uncommon case, but one we'd rather explain clearly than promise a precision this version of the tool doesn't guarantee for it.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free to add page numbers with Unido?

Yes, Unido is completely free, with no usage limits and no need to create an account.

Does my file get uploaded to a server?

No. The entire process happens inside your own browser. Your file never leaves your device or gets sent to any server.

What numbering formats can I choose?

You can choose between "1 / 12" (page number and total pages) or "Page 1" (just the number, with the word Page in front).

Where is the page number placed?

You can choose between bottom-center or the bottom-right corner of each page.

Do I need to install a font for the number to show up?

No. The number is drawn with Helvetica, one of the 14 standard fonts every PDF reader already has built in, so it displays correctly in any program with no font file to embed.

Does this replace the content of my pages?

No. The page number is added as a new element on top of each page's existing content — nothing that was already there is ever deleted or replaced.

What happens if my PDF already has rotated pages?

The number is placed at the bottom of the page based on that page's own internal coordinates. On pages that already carry a rotation, it may not land exactly at the visual bottom once that rotation is applied — a known limitation in uncommon cases.

What's the maximum file size?

You can add page numbers to PDF files up to 100 MB.

Can I number a password-protected PDF?

No, this tool doesn't support encrypted or password-protected PDFs. Remove the protection from the file before numbering its pages.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes, Unido works in any modern browser, on both mobile and desktop, with nothing to install.
